How to Price Social Media Management in 2026

What social media agencies actually charge — by platform, post volume, and depth of community management.

Why "$500/month for social" is killing agencies

Social media management is the most over-commoditized service in the marketing world. Freelancers on Upwork bid $300/mo for "social media management." That's three posts a week and not much else.

The agencies winning at higher price points position social as a strategic brand surface — not a content calendar. Three things separate them:

  1. Strategy phase — brand voice, audience research, channel mix. ($1,500-$3,000 setup.)
  2. Production rigor — actual photography, video, design. Not just stock photos with text.
  3. Community + analytics — daily DM/comment management, monthly reporting with insights, not just metrics.

The 2026 social retainer benchmark

Foundation — single platform, modest output

  • Setup: $1,500
  • Monthly: $1,500
  • 1 platform (Instagram OR LinkedIn)
  • 12 posts/month + content calendar
  • Monthly analytics report

Growth — two platforms, real engagement layer

  • Setup: $3,500
  • Monthly: $3,500
  • 2 platforms (Instagram + LinkedIn or TikTok)
  • 20 posts/month + 8 stories/wk
  • Community management M-F
  • Bi-weekly strategy calls

Scale — full social-as-channel operation

  • Setup: $8,000
  • Monthly: $8,000
  • 4 platforms
  • 40 posts/month + daily stories + 4 reels/wk
  • Daily community management (incl. weekends)
  • Monthly creative shoot day, UGC creator coordination

Three pricing mistakes to avoid

1. Per-post pricing. Clients churn the moment they realize they're paying for activity, not outcomes. Sell the program, not the calendar.

2. Bundling community management as "free." It's hugely time-intensive — 1-3 hours per day for active brands. Charge for it explicitly in Growth/Scale tiers.

3. Promising every platform. Pick 2 you'll do exceptionally well. Decline the rest. "We do everything" is a red flag to sophisticated buyers.

What an extra $1,500/mo gets you

If you can land Growth ($3,500) instead of Foundation ($1,500), the difference is $24K/year per client. That covers:

  • A junior community manager (or 50% of one)
  • Content production overhead
  • Strategy time you can't bill hourly

The biggest unlock is presenting your tiers correctly. Most agencies stuff everything into one fee. Three tiers force the prospect to choose — and most choose the middle.
